Clear Books successfully completes Making Tax Digital filing

Clear Books, one of the UK’s first online accounting software providers, has successfully submitted its first VAT return through HMRC’s Making Tax Digital API.

With Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT coming into effect from April 2019, the successful beta test paves the way for thousands of Clear Books users to complete simple three-step VAT returns directly to HMRC.

Chris Morford, Head of Account Management for Clear Books: “We’re delighted to be Making Tax Digital ready. Our team has worked closely with HMRC to develop an online accounting system that’s easy to use, affordable, and provides the data entry options of either an online spreadsheet or a fully featured online accounting interface. It’s not only functional, but it’s also innovative, and I’m proud as punch of our team for bringing it to fruition.”

Clear Books will continue to participate in the Making Tax Digital pilot, providing as many practices as possible with access to digital VAT filing. David Cuthbertson from Shilton Accounting Services in Oxfordshire was the accountant pressing the button on the first submission: “I was delighted by the ease of the process. To complete the return I needed to navigate to the Clear Books VAT return section, then select the VAT period before confirming the return. Simple.”

The Clear Books Making Tax Digital submission was a true cloud-based experience, with HMRC representatives, the accountant and product experts dialing into a Google Hangout from different parts of the country.
